Reinstatement of Swiss citizenship

Reinstatement of Swiss citizenship is only possible for those who previously held Swiss citizenship but lost it through forfeiture, renunciation or, for Swiss women, by marrying a foreign national before 1992.

You have lost your Swiss citizenship and would like to get it back. You will find everything you need to know about reinstatement of Swiss citizenship and the general conditions on the website of the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM).

The SEM is responsible for handling applications submitted abroad at a Swiss representation.

Important

Swiss law allows dual citizenship. You can in principle keep your original citizenship. Acquisition of Swiss citizenship may, however, result in loss of your original citizenship if the law of your country of origin requires it. Relevant official information can be obtained from the authorities of your country of origin.
